How do you identify Sheepshead?
- Also called convict fish. A light background with vertical black bars.
- Prominent teeth, including incisors, molars and rounded grinders. No barbels on the lower jaw.
- Strong, sharp spines in the dorsal and anal fins.
- FWC lists size up to 36 inches, common to 13 inches. The state record is 15 lb 2 oz, caught near Homosassa.
Look-alikes
- Black drum. Black drum have chin barbels and lack the incisor-like teeth. Juvenile black drum also have vertical bars.
- Red drum (redfish). Redfish have a tail spot and no vertical bars. Sheepshead have the bars and the front teeth.
Where and when to catch Sheepshead in Florida?
Sheepshead use coastal structure such as oyster bars, seawalls and tidal creeks, and they move nearshore in late winter and early spring to spawn. Spawning is typically in March and April, which is also when the 50-fish vessel limit applies, and they lay only part of their eggs at a time. They eat mostly crustaceans and small fish. FWC lists live shrimp, sand fleas or fiddler crabs on a small hook on the bottom. Watch the sharp gill covers. Piers, bridges and seawalls match that structure habitat.
