How do you identify Spanish mackerel?
- Bluish-green back fading to silvery sides, with irregular golden-yellow spots.
- A bluish-black blotch on the front of the first dorsal fin. King mackerel lack that blotch.
- The lateral line slopes gently from behind the gill cover to the tail. A king mackerel's lateral line drops sharply.
- FWC lists size up to 36 inches. The state record is 12 lb, caught near Fort Pierce.
Look-alikes
- King mackerel. Kings lack adult spots, lack the dorsal blotch, and the lateral line drops sharply. The king limit is 24 inches and 2 or 3 fish.
- Wahoo. Wahoo are longer and slimmer, with wavy dark bars and a long, low first dorsal fin.
Where and when to catch Spanish mackerel in Florida?
Spanish mackerel are found inshore, nearshore and offshore throughout Florida, frequently over grass beds and reefs, and they are absent from north Florida waters in winter. Schools move north in spring and return south when the water drops below 70 degrees F. They spawn offshore from spring through summer and eat small fish and invertebrates. FWC says birds diving on bait often mark a school, and that a heavy monofilament leader is needed because the teeth are sharp. The profile lists 30 to 60 pound leader and 10 to 15 pound line.
