How do you identify Gray triggerfish?
- Olive-gray, with plate-like scales and a small mouth full of chisel-like teeth.
- Dorsal and anal fins are marbled. On large adults the upper and lower tail lobes are elongated.
- Young fish have large dark spots on the back, and those spots sometimes remain on adults.
- FWC lists size up to 17 inches. The state record is 12 lb 7 oz, caught near Pensacola on July 15, 2001.
Look-alikes
- Red snapper. Often on the same hard bottom. FWC says gray triggerfish are almost always found with red snapper, which has its own season and a 16-inch Gulf minimum.
Where and when to catch Gray triggerfish in Florida?
Gray triggerfish live on hard bottom, reefs and ledges in water deeper than 80 feet, and FWC says they are almost always found with red snapper. They eat crabs, sea urchins, shrimp, sand dollars and mollusks. Anglers catch them on squid or cut bait, and they are also taken by spear. FWC says a small, very sharp hook matters because the mouth is hard and bony, and that the fish average 2 to 4 pounds. They can lock the first dorsal spine; pressing the second spine unlocks it.
