How do you identify Black sea bass?
- Also called rock bass or rockfish. Dark brown or black body, with a dorsal fin striped white over black.
- Large males develop a fatty hump in front of the dorsal fin and blue and ebony markings. Females may have faint vertical bars.
- The tail may have three lobes, and adults have an elongated ray on the top of the tail. The back edge of the gill cover has a sharp spine.
- FWC lists size up to 24 inches (8 pounds), common to 12 inches (1.5 pounds). The state record is 5 lb 1 oz, caught near Panama City.
Look-alikes
- Gag grouper. Often caught on the same bottom. Gag are a grouper with a 24-inch minimum and a short season, not a sea bass.
Where and when to catch Black sea bass in Florida?
Black sea bass live in coastal water near structure and rocky bottom. Smaller fish are often inshore in finger channels. FWC says they are most often caught on the central and northern coasts and sometimes reach south Florida in cold winters. Mature fish generally prefer 20 to 80 feet. Juveniles use shallower water over seagrass and near jetties and reefs. They spawn January through March. Older females become males. They eat small fish, crustaceans and shellfish, and anglers often catch them while bottom fishing for grouper or snapper. Listed baits are squid, shrimp, cut bait, and jigs tipped with squid.
